Chapter Five

Date: June 29, 3021
Time: 10:00pm
Location: Aeryk and Brian’s Condo

Brian forces Aeryk onto him and begins exploring his body with his hands, the fire within their bodies rising. His hands run under Aeryk’s shirt and caress’s his soft flesh. They travel down and he feels Aeryk’s rear, he squeezes them tightly in his hands and Aeryk lets out a passionate moan.

Brian grabs under Aeryk and pulls him closer and feels Aeryk’s leg brush against his hardening sex. He grunts and pushes Aeryk’s head back, giving him access to his neck.

The fire within Brian rises to a sweltering heat as he continues to work on Aeryk’s neck and unbutton his shirt. At last Brian is able to get Aeryk’s shirt off and he tosses it onto the floor.

Aeryk releases himself from Brian’s grip and uses one hand to take off Brian’s shirt, the other running his hands over Brian’s throbbing cock. The moment Brian’s chest is exposed; Aeryk begins to lather it with long lust-filled kisses.

His body begins to tingle as Brian lets out low moans of pleasure. He hears Brian cry "Oh God Aeryk," which turns him on all the more. He pushes Brian onto the couch and straddles him.

Brian snatches Aeryk around the waist and pulls the smaller body up, and he begins to kiss Aeryk’s body. The sweet scent of Aeryk’s cologne intoxicates Brian’s mind. The feel of another, strong body close to his sends his mind awhirl. His hands search around Aeryk’s inner thigh, massaging it, until he found Aeryk’s already erect manhood.

The fire within their passion filled bodies is becoming more difficult to bear. Brian must have Aeryk.

My body, Brian says to himself. Is this what it feels like to love another man? I’ve known Aeryk all my life, yet his body is so alien to me. It’s like I’m seeing him for the first time. His body is so warm. His lips are so soft and sweet. His hands send a fire through my body. Is this what it’s like to feel love?

Aeryk lowers himself to Brian’s eye level and they stop for a moment, breathing heavily from the eruption of passion. To Aeryk, there is something different about Brian’s gaze. He doesn’t seem so deeply confused as he once looked. Brian, are you sure about this? He gently runs his hands through Brian’s hair and he sends another gentle kiss on Aeryk’s passing arm.

Brian looks up at Aeryk and smiles slightly. "Hi." He says, still drunk off Aeryk’s scent. Is this really happening to me? It feels so right having him in my arms. His small, perfect body. He thinks tracing his fingers up, along Aeryk’s stomach and chest. His beautiful green eyes. His heart, He rests his head on Aeryk’s chest and smiles as Aeryk gently wraps his arms around Brian’s head. This feels so right. But why am I still afraid?

Aeryk allows Brian to fall back and cups his head in his hands. He gazes deeply into Brian’s brown eyes and sees, again, the confusion and fear. Whatever is between him and Brian, it is beginning to dwindle.

"Brian is something wrong?" Aeryk cautiously asks, slipping off Brian’s legs and sitting next to him.

Brian looks up at Aeryk briefly then looks ahead at the wall. "I-I don’t know."

"Hey, you can tell me anything remember?"

Brian nods and runs his hand over Aeryk’s leg. "I don’t know. I’m just so confused right now."

"About what? Us?"

"Yeah, I guess." He pauses a moment, staring blankly away from Aeryk. "I just wish I could find an easy answer to all of this."

"Brian, tell me what you’re thinking about." Aeryk looks at his friend, worried.

"I’m just confused, that’s all. It’s like, when I’m with you, I see my best friend who has nothing but love for me. Someone who’s done the world for me and has never asked for anything in return. And then I’m with Alasen, someone kind, smart, funny, and beautiful. But then there’s my family." He scoffs. "I’m the only child and I have to live up to certain expectations about my own family. All my life I’ve been somewhat of a disappointment to them, mostly to my father. The first time I feel that they’ve ever really felt proud of me was when I first joined the F.Y."

Brian turns to Aeryk. "I know they want me to be happy, and happy to them is having a wife and kids. And I see Alasen as a way of making my life easier and more complete."

"Complete for who Brian?" Aeryk mutters.

Brian frowns slightly. "Them, I guess. I know Alasen wants the same thing my parents want. And I guess a part of me wants it too, a little boy I can play ball with." He smirks. "But what do I matter? As long as their happy, I should be happy too, right?"

"No." Aeryk says sharply. "No, you will not be happy living like that. You should do what makes you happy first and foremost Brian. What makes you happy Brian? Will sacrificing what makes you truly happy in this world really worth it? Will raising a family with a wife and kids make you really happy?"

Brian looks at Aeryk, confused. "What are you getting at?"

"You said that marrying Alasen and having kids will make your life easier, right?"

"Well, yeah."

"But will you be happy?"

"No." Brian says lowly. "No, I won’t."

"So what will make you happy?"

Brian pauses a moment to collect his thoughts. Will Alasen make me happy? God knows she’s beautiful, with a personality to match. He thinks, for a moment, about what life might be like if he were to stay with Alasen. He does see them having children, but he doesn’t find any comfort there.

He then turns to Aeryk, and he suddenly finds the lost comfort. He sees them together, enjoying each other’s presence as they always have. He sees Aeryk being strong and supportive, and always humbling. He sees him in his bed, with Aeryk in his arms, safe. Most of all, he sees a deep love in Aeryk’s eyes. A love that has always been there, and will always be there. With Aeryk, he has a friend and a lover. And with Alasen, he just has a means of making other people happy and not himself.

Though Brian should be more than elated to find out the only thing in this world that could make him happy, he has become equally afraid.

Brian’s fear register in his eyes, and Aeryk turns away, feeling defeat again. So this is really it? I’ve had him once, twice, and I’ve lost him both times. The hell were you thinking allowing Brian to have you like that? You’ve lost Aeryk give up.

Aeryk silently rises from the couch and walks away toward his room.

Brian, seeing Aeryk walk by, instantly gets to his feet. "Where are you going?"

"To my room." He says lowly. "I’m sorry Brian, but I can’t handle this right now." He reaches his room and shuts the door slowly. Aeryk leans back against his door and heaves out a sigh. He hears Brian storm into his own room and slam the door shut, causing him to jump slightly.

Aeryk suddenly finds tears streaming down his eyes. He was so sure that time, why did it have to go away?

Brian, too, finds tears running down his face. He slams his fist against his door and clenches his teeth. "Damn it." He snarls. "Aeryk," He whispers. "I’m so sorry."

Aeryk falls onto his bed and begins to weep. Damn you Brian. Damn you for holding my heart!

Brian lays down on his bed and stares at the ceiling. How? How do I tell you how much I love you, and how much it hurts me to love you? I’m trapped Aeryk, please tell me how to free myself. You’re the only one who can.

Baby I love you, you are my life
My happiest moments weren't complete if you weren't by my side
You're my relation and connection to the sun
With you next to me, there's no darkness I can't overcome
You are my raindrops, I am the seed
With you and God who's my sunlight I'm blooming, grown so beautifully
Baby I'm so proud, proud to be yours
You make the confusion go all away from this cold and misty world

I am in love with you
You set me free
I can't do this thing called life without you here with me
Cause I'm dangerously in love with you
I'll never leave
Just keep loving me the way I love you loving me

Aeryk removes his face from his tear soaked pillows and gazes at his reflection in his mirror. His eyes have changed from the once happy green, to the despair of ice blue. The feeling of loss pang in Aeryk’s heart again. He lost the last person in the world he has ever loved, forever.

I know you love me, love me for who I am
Cause years before I became who I am, baby you were my man
I know it ain't easy, easy loving me
I appreciate the love and dedication from you to me
In awe of my love for you, sometimes makes me wanna cry
Realize all of my blessings, I'm grateful to have you by my side

I am in love with you
You set me free
I can't do this thing called life without you here with me
Cause I'm dangerously in love with you
I'll never leave
Just keep loving me the way I love you loving me

The entire condo where once there were sounds of love, passion, and friendship is now silent except for the sound of despair and fear.

Brian lays in his room torn between his love for Aeryk and his devotion to his family.

Aeryk lays in his room, feeling lost and afraid. Both men not knowing what the other is feeling or thinking. Both men wishing desperately to hold one another. Both men falling dangerously further and further away from each other.

Every time I see your face, my heart smiles
Every time it feels so good, it hurts sometimes
Created in this world to love, to hold, to feel, to breathe
to live you
Dangerously in love

I am in love with you
You set me free
I can't do this thing called life without you here with me
Cause I'm dangerously in love with you
I'll never leave
Just keep loving me the way I love you loving me

Dangerously
Dangerous, dangerously in love with you
Oh, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you
I love you... dangerously in love...

Location: F.Y. Police Headquarters

"So how’s the watch going?" Derryk asks Aeryk.

Aeryk shrugs. "We haven’t even caught a glimpse of the man. I’m sure he knows we’re watching him."

Derryk nods slightly. "So what do you suggest we do?"

Aeryk shrugs again. "If I knew how important the book is, I could make a decision."

Derryk rises from his chair and walks over to a window and looks down at the policemen and recruits bustling down on the floor level.

"The book was found by my grandfather when he was digging somewhere in China, I never could remember the name." He turns to Aeryk. "Of course my grandfather was intelligent enough not to bring an interpreter so he had no way of translating the words written within. But, as soon as he got back to America he found out that the book was actually a very ancient book of spells."

Aeryk arches a brow. "A spell book?" He scoffs.

"I know it sounds stupid Aeryk, but that’s what it is."

"So, what’s so special about it?"

"The fact that it’s one of a kind and worth a great deal of money, among other things."

"What other things?"

"Well," Derryk sighs and sits back in his chair. "Within in the book is a spell that is supposed to give the caster immortality and the powers of a god."

Aeryk laughs. "You’re kidding me right?"

Derryk shrugs. "Don’t know; it’s never been tried before."

"And why’s that?" Aeryk asks sarcastically.

"There are four items the caster must have before performing the spell. Four statues of the four Gods believed to be worshipped at the time the book was written."

"And you believe in all of this?"

Derryk gazes at Aeryk. "I believe that the book is mine by right, and it was stolen from me. I don’t care if the book is the real thing or not, or just superstition. But if it is, we can’t have anyone handle that book."

"Alright Chief, I’ll get it back for you. I’ll get Jeff to go with me, I might need him."

Derryk nods. "Good, take anyone you need."

Aeryk rises from his chair and leaves Derryk’s office and heads toward his own. "Man, this has got to be the strangest assignment I’ve ever had."

"Excuse me?" A tall man with misty gray eyes and short brown hair calls to Aeryk.

"Yeah, can I help you?" Aeryk asks.

"I was, uh, looking for the Chief."

"Oh, he’s just down the end of this hall." Aeryk says pointing. "He’s the one with the emblem in the door."

"Thanks." The man smiles at Aeryk and heads toward Derryk’s office.

Aeryk stares at the man wearing the F.Y. uniform until he disappears behind the office door.

"Did you see that?" Jackie gapes from behind Aeryk.

Aeryk turns to Jackie. "How could I miss it?"

"I get first dibs."

"Like hell you do! Did you see the way he smiled at me?"

Jackie snorts. "Keep dreaming boy."

"I’ve never noticed him around here before." Aeryk says as he and Jackie walk toward her office.

"I think I’ve seen him a couple times. He’s an instructor." Jackie says casually as she sits in her chair.

"Do you know his name?"

"Jason Lawson, I think." She leans back in her chair smirking at Aeryk.

"What are you smirking at?" Aeryk asks.

"Nothing." She lies. "I know what you’re thinking."

Aeryk’s eyes widen in outrage. "You do not!"

Jackie laughs. "You always were a horrible liar, Aeryk." She rises from her chair and faces Aeryk. "How about we place a little bet?"

Aeryk’s eyes narrow in suspicion. "What do you mean?"

"Let’s find out what team he bats for."

"And to the winner?"

"Goes the spoils, of course." She winks. "Of course the winner will be me. For I am the fairest one of all."

Aeryk laughs. "Careful now, I think your eyes are starting to turn brown. Anyway I need to prepare a little midnight rendezvous with the book thief, care to join me?"

"Sounds like fun. Who’s all coming?"

"Right now, just you and me. I’m gonna go hunt down Jeff and Joe. We might need their help with this one."

"And Brian?"

Aeryk’s stomach turns. "Oh yeah, him too." He adds quickly. "I’ll talk to you later alright?" He dashes off for his office before Jackie can say anything else.

Aeryk sits in his chair and begins to jot down ideas on how to successfully complete the mission.

"Crap, I need blue prints." Aeryk groans as he reaches for his phone.

He dials Jeff’s extension. "Hey Jeff, I need your help with something." Aeryk says as Jeff’s picture appears.

"Sure, what’s up?"

"I need you to find a way to get blue prints for the Davis and Graves building, can you do that?"

"Sure thing. When do you need them?"

"As soon as possible. Also keep yourself free, I’m gonna need you."

"Sounds good, talk to you later." Jeff’s picture vanishes.

"Alright," Aeryk mutters. "What in the hell am I gonna do with Joe?"

A light tapping on his door interrupts Aeryk’s thoughts. "C’mon in." He says.

Brian peers his head in. "Hey bud." He says uneasily.

Aeryk blanches. "Uh, hey. What’s up?"

"Nothin’. Can I come in? I need to talk to you."

"Sure." Aeryk says with a steady voice.

Brian enters the room and shuts the door silently. He then faces Aeryk, wringing his hands. "Look, uh, about the other day..."

Aeryk heaves out a sigh. "Brian, please?"

"I know Aeryk." Brian replies. "I feel really bad. You’ve been avoiding me ever since. It’s not fair."

"Life’s not fair." Aeryk mutters. "What happened, happened alright?"

Brian frowns slightly. "No, it’s not alright. And I don’t want us to be like this anymore."

"Then what do you want us to be Brian?" Aeryk snaps.

Brian, totally unprepared for that question, slowly sits in Aeryk’s couch. "I don’t know." He says lowly. "That’s the problem."

"Yes, it is."

"Hey, I came here to find a solution for this Aeryk and you’re not making things easy."

"Not making it easy?" Aeryk repeats, aghast. "You know exactly how I feel about you and you think I’m making this hard? You’re the one with the problems right now Brian, not me!"

"You’re right, it’s my fault. Everything’s my fault."

Guilt takes over Aeryk’s heart. He rises from his chair and sits next to Brian. "I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that."

"No, you’re right Aeryk. What I did to you was wrong, and I shouldn’t have done that. It was stupid of me."

Aeryk sighs and leans back in the couch. "So, what should we do?"

Brian gives Aeryk a sidelong glance. "I wish I knew.

"You know what’s best for you Brian. What I want, you can’t give me."

"What?"

"Isn’t it obvious Brian? You can’t give me what I want. I need somebody who’ll be there for me as not just a friend, but as a lover on all levels. I don’t want somebody who can’t make up his mind and choose between what really matters for him."

Brian stares at Aeryk, shocked. "What are you saying?"

"I’m saying," Aeryk begins. "That I love you Brian and I think I always will love you. But I’m not going to allow this to screw me up more than I already am."

Brian lurches to his feet. "Aeryk, can’t you at least give me a chance?"

Aeryk slowly rises to his feet and meets Brian’s gaze calmly and evenly. "Brian, I refuse to allow myself to be hurt anymore. I know you want to remain with Alasen. I’ve heard you both over the phone, and I know when you tell me your hanging out with friends, you’re going to her. I’m not going to be some toy you can play with and put away at your own whim."

"No Aeryk, it’s not like that." Brian says.

"Then what is it like?" Aeryk adds, his voice is cold and stabs into Brian like knives.

Brian looks away a moment. "When I held you, then, it was the best feeling in the world. I knew there was something in my heart for you Aeryk. But it scared me too. Don’t you understand how hard this is for me? I want so much to indulge those feelings, and on the same token, I can’t."

"Brian," Aeryk begins. "Please stop."

"No." Brian turns on Aeryk. "I won’t stop. I want you to understand how I feel and what I’m going through."

"I know damn well what you’re feeling right now Brian! You think drilling it in me will change my mind? Do you think it’s fair to place more emotional stress on me? I can’t handle it Brian. I’m tired Brian, tired of all this crap. I didn’t ask for you to do what you did, nor did I want for you to feel the way you do. Hell, I was expecting the opposite!"

"So you don’t want me to feel this way?"

"I want for you to decide, here and now, what you want."

Brian stares at Aeryk for a moment. He’s so angry with me. I thought by telling him how I truly feel, things would turn out alright. I’ve hurt my best friend, and for what? I was stupid to think I could pull this off. Asking for Aeryk to be there for my physical needs makes him nothing more than a slut. He knew that’s what I wanted. Damn it Brian, you screwed up. Think! Either you admit to it now, and have Aeryk all the way. Or be a chicken-shit and allow your family to continue to run your life.

Aeryk walks back to his chair and falls heavily into it. "Well?"

"I don’t know Aeryk, I’m not strong enough to make that decision."

Aeryk shakes his head. "Fine. We have an assignment tonight. I’ll see you here later."

"Aeryk, I..." Brian begins.

"Is there something else?" Aeryk turns his ice blue eyes on Brian.

"No, sorry." He leaves the office and slowly shuts to door.

Aeryk waits until the sound of Brian’s heavy booted footsteps fade away down the hall until he heaves out a pained sigh.

He turns to his fish and pulls out their food from his drawer. "I had to do it, right?" He asks them as he sprinkles the food onto the water. "It isn’t fair to either of us if I went along with it, right?"

The fish, more interested in the food, provide no answer. "A lot of help you are." He scowls as he puts the food back into his drawer.

There’s another knock on his door and Aeryk nearly erupts with frustration. "Yes!" He bellows.

Derryk enters the room with the man Aeryk met moments before. "You alright?" He asks.

Aeryk nods. "Yeah, sorry about that."

"Anyway, this is Jason Lawson, you’re new partner."

"Excuse me?" Aeryk stammers.

"It’s only temporary." Derryk adds.

"What about Brian?"

"He’ll take care of Joe and do his own thing."

Aeryk gapes at Derryk, then Jason, and back to Derryk. "So, uh..."

"Great!" Derryk says. "I’ll leave you two to get acquainted." He quickly dashes out of the room.

Aeryk shakes his head and smiles at Jason. "Our Chief." He holds out his hand. "Aeryk Green."

Jason takes Aeryk’s hand and shakes his. "Jason Lawson, nice to meet yah."

Aeryk motions for Jason to sit. "I thought you were a recruit trainer."

"I was, until I got bored of it. I want to do more with my life than train people to do something I, myself, would rather do."

"Why didn’t you just start in the field?"

"I broke my leg." He smirks. "I didn’t want to leave, so they offered me the position of recruit trainer."

Aeryk nods, then looks at the clock. "Well, I guess we should head out. You’re lucky enough to join me in the middle of an assignment."

"Sounds awesome." Jason says rising to his feet.

Aeryk smiles. "I’ll introduce you everyone else and we can head out."

Location: The Inner City Café

"So have you lived in New D.C. all your life?" Jason asks as he and Aeryk sit at a bistro table.

"No, I lived in Seattle. Well, what’s left of it anyway."

During the earthquake, several cities and even parts of the continents, collapsed into the ocean. Now, most coastal cities remain under water. Washington D.C. was one of the hardest hit, and a city called New D.C. was created.

Jason looks at Aeryk. "Really? Is it true the Space Needle is still standing?"

Aeryk shrugs. "I guess, I’ve never bothered to go back. Too many painful memories."

"Oh, you had some relatives who died there?"

"All of them, actually. I’m the only one left."

Jason pales considerably. "I’m sorry, I didn’t know."

Aeryk smiles warmly. "Don’t worry about it. I’ve moved on actually, with some help from a friend."

"Brian?" Jason asks cautiously.

"Yeah, how’d you guess?"

"Well, he kinda gave me a nasty look when you introduced me to him. And, uh, he seemed to be real close to you. I could tell by your body language."

"Yeah, we’re real close." He grins as he sees Jason’s look of shock. "Not that close, we’re just best friends."

Jason’s face eases a bit. "That’s good." He pauses as the waitress brings them their sandwiches and drinks. "So you seein’ anybody?" He asks boldly.

Aeryk shakes his head. "Nah, you?"

"Not yet." He gazes at Aeryk, his gray eyes piercing into Aeryk’s light blue/green eyes.

Though Jason isn’t nearly as built as Brian is, he still has a nice tan body that accents his toned lithe body well. His broad shoulders tell Aeryk that Jason is a swimmer.

Aeryk stammers for a moment, giving Jason the wrong message.

"Oh, you’re not gay? I’m sorry!"

Aeryk continues to stammer until the words blurt out. "No, I mean, yes I am! I just wasn’t expecting you to say something like that."

Jason laughs. "Sorry if I scared you. I’ve been known to be a little blunt at times."

Aeryk nods. "Yeah you are. But it’s nice though."

"So, how long have you known?"

"Not very long, maybe a week or two."

"Does anybody know?"

"Just Brian, Jackie, and now you." Aeryk smiles.

Jason looks at Aeryk. "You have a beautiful smile."

Aeryk instantly turns redder than the sun. "Th-thanks."

Jason winks and takes a bite of his sandwich. "No problem."

Aeryk begins to inhale his sandwich. Man, when did this happen? Jackie’s gonna be so pissed! He starts chuckling.

"What’s so funny?" Jason asks.

"Nothing, I was just thinking about some silly bet Jackie made with me today."

"And what was that?" Jason says.

"Well, don’t take this the wrong way, but Jackie bet me that she would get you instead of me."

Jason laughs. "Well, she’s in for a big let down."

As fate would have it, Jackie and Aaron appear from around the corner. "Hey Aeryk!" Jackie bellows. "Fancy meeting you here."

Aeryk arches a brow. "Indeed."

"Who’s this?" Aaron motions to Jason.

"Oh, that’s right." Aeryk says. "This is Jason, my new partner. Jason this is Aaron."

Jason and Aaron shake hands. "What do you mean ‘new partner’? What ‘appened with Brian?" Aaron asks.

"It’s only temporary." Jason says.

"I hope you don’t mind, but I told Aaron about the assignment." Jackie says, not taking her eyes off of Jason.

"Yeah!" Aaron cries. "I was beginning to think you didn’t like me no more Aeryk."

"Of course I do, Aaron. It just slipped my mind." Aeryk teases. "Why don’t you two join us for lunch and I’ll brief you on the situation."

Jackie, not even thinking twice, grabs Aaron by the arms and drags him into the café.

Jason and Aeryk laugh. "So, should we tell her?" Jason asks.

"Nah, let’s keep her guessing for a while." Aeryk winks.

Time: 11:58pm
Location: Davis and Graves

A large black van silently pulls up into the alleyway facing Davis and Graves. The streets around it are dark and silent, as is the towering building before it.

Aeryk turns to Joe and Jeff. "Alright, you are our eyes and ears from here on in."

Joe nods. "You sure you need me for this?" He asks nervously.

Aeryk smiles warmly. "You’re part of this team now. You’ll be fine." He turns to Jackie, Aaron, Jason, Brent, and Brian. "Alright, remember code names. We don’t know if anyone’s inside there still."

"What’s your code name Jason?" Jackie asks batting her eyes.

Jason tries to contain his laughter. "It’s uh, Gimp." He blushes slightly when everybody snickers. "I got it when I broke my leg. It’s kinda embarrassing."

"You can tell us all about it later." Brian says testily. "Let’s get this over with."

"Alright guys, guns ready and headsets on." Aeryk orders as he slowly opens the sliding door of the van.

The six, black uniform clad, F.Y. Officers emerge from the van and rush over to the Davis and Graves building.

"Alright Shadow, where to?" Aeryk asks.

Jeff slides over to a computer set into the side of the van and brings up the blue prints of the Davis and Graves building.

"Alright, there should be a grate just below where you’re standing." Jeff says looking a six small dots located on the computer monitor. Jeff insisted that they keep trackers on, just so he can easily locate any injured member.

Aeryk looks down and sees the grate. "Great, some assistance Pyro." Aeryk says turning to Aaron.

Aaron grins ferally, pulls out a cigarette from his suit. "Right oh, Monk." He reaches for his back and pulls out his Rekka 2-36gt. He activates the pilot flame and lights his cigarette.

Brian snorts impatiently. "Will you hurry up?" He snaps.

"Oy, gotta keep myself calm." Aaron retorts as he kneels down. "Alright ladies, hold onto your panties." He activates the flamethrower and sends a thin line of intense, white-hot flames onto the grate.

A few moments later, Aaron pulls back and allows Brent and Brian to kick the grate down.

"Okay guys, the sewer isn’t very far down so you can just jump. As soon as all of you are down there, head to the east for about thirty feet." Jeff calls.

The six jump down into the sewer below. They put on their night vision goggles and walk down the smelly cavern for about thirty feet until they find a rusty door covered in a thin film of mucus.

"Oh god, tell me this isn’t the door!" Jackie groans.

"I’m afraid so Willow." This time it is Joe. "Now you’ve got to be careful from this point. As soon as you enter the main lobby from the basement, there will be robotic guards wandering around. They do have weapons."

"Can you tell us what kind they are?" Brent asks.

"Just a second." Joe slides over to his own computer and pulls up a file with the types of security robots. "Okay, just your basic Wheelers guys."

Wheelers are the first type of artificially intelligent robots created by man. They are of a basic design without any appendages beside their head and arms. They propel themselves with a series of wheels placed below a wide box shaped lower end.

"Do you know how many are in the building, Stretch?" Aeryk asks.

"I don’t have that info on me at the moment guys, sorry." Joe says lowly.

Everybody lets out a slight groan. "It’s okay Stretch, we should be fine. Just do what you can to find out, okay?"

"Rodger that Monk." Joe says, his spirit lightens slightly.

Jason takes the grueling liberty of opening the sewer door and the six of them silently climb of the flight of stairs into the basement.

"Uh-oh, looks like we got a lock on the door, Stretch." Jackie says as she reaches the door leading into the main lobby.

Joe begins to furiously type on the keyboard and seconds later he gives the go ahead to enter the lobby.

Jeff looks at Joe, amazed. "How did you learn to do that?"

"Hours of sitting at home doing nothing." Joe smirks.

Aeryk and the others creep into the main lobby. "Alright, keep your eyes out for Wheelers. Shadow, any idea where the book is?"

"Well, there’s this one room on the fifth floor that is emitting some blocking signal. I can’t hack into it."

"Stretch, have you tried?" Aeryk continues.

"Yeah, nothing."

"Well, it looks like the fifth floor is our target." Brian says looking at Aeryk.

Jackie and Aaron strut over to the elevators. "Damn it!" Aaron cries. "Things don’t work."

Brent sends Aaron a dark look. "In case you’ve failed to remember, we’re on a mission here."

Aaron shivers from Brent’s cold stare. "Yeah, right."

"Will you put that cigarette out?" Jackie hisses. "I can’t stand the smell of those things."

"They ‘elp me calm down." Aaron replies taking a long drag.

Brian and Aeryk, both, send dark glares at Jackie and Aaron. "Both of you, shut up." Brian snaps.

The six of them finally regain order and head for stairs located in the far back of the building.

As they reach the fifth floor, Aeryk motions for them to stop. "Alright, this place is huge. We’re not even sure the book is on this floor. I want everybody to split up onto a group and spread out. If anyone is in trouble or finds the book, obviously use the headset."

Aaron and Jackie instantly latch onto each other, and Brian steps up to Aeryk before Jason could. "Ready?" He asks, giving Jason a dark look. Keep away.

"Uh, yeah." Aeryk turns to Jason. "You gonna be alright?"

"Sure." Jason says cheerfully, despite the fact that he’d rather be with Aeryk.

Aeryk nods and he, along with Brian, head of the stairway and onto the fifth floor.

As soon as they are separated from the rest of the group, Brian turns to Aeryk. "So what’s with the new guy?" He asks switching the headset so that nobody can hear him, but he can hear him or her.

"What do you mean?" Aeryk asks, doing the same.

"He seems to like you enough."

Aeryk rolls his eyes. "He’s a nice guy Brian, so don’t go there alright?"

"I’m not saying anything." Brian says. "I just want to know why he was all close to you like that?"

During the whole ordeal of the van ride, entering the sewer, and into the building, Jason has kept within close vicinity of Aeryk.

"I don’t know Brian." Aeryk shrugs. "Are you jealous or something?"

"And what if I am?" Brian snaps.

Suddenly there is a bright flash in front of Brian and Aeryk. A Wheeler emerges from the darkness and shoots another blast of plasmic energy from the guns welded to its hands.

Brian and Aeryk dive onto opposite ends of the hall. "Damn it Brian, you pick the best times to pick a fight." Aeryk snarls activating his gun.

"Oh, so it’s my fault the Wheeler came out of no where and shot at us?" Brian demands, activating his gun. He then hurls himself from his hiding spot and sends a perfectly aimed shot at the Wheelers head. The plasmic energy causing the Wheeler to shudder and sparks dance across its body before it shuts down.

Aeryk storms out. "If you hadn’t brought it up we could’ve avoided that!"

Another blast of energy flies from the opposite end of the hall, barely missing Aeryk who turns his head and sends a couple blasts onto the assailing Wheeler.

"Hey, you two alright?" Jackie calls on the headset.

Aeryk presses a button on the side of the headset. "Yeah Willow, thanks." He releases the button and glares at Brian.

"I don’t get you." Brian says.

"Excuse me? You don’t get me?" Aeryk gasps, aghast.

"Yeah! One minute you claim to be in love with me, the next your going after someone else!"

"The hell you talking about? I never said anything about going after anyone."

Brian flails his arms in exasperation. "Forget it." He storms off.

Aeryk rushes after Brian, nearly beside himself with rage. "Who do you think you are, talking shit like that? You have no right."

"And you have every right to act to me like you’ve been doing? Listen, all I’ve been trying to tell you is that I..." Brian lets out a roar of pain as another Wheeler appears from around a corner and shoots him on the arm.

Aeryk barks in outrage and blasts the Wheeler in the head. "Fucker!" He turns to Brian. "You alright?"

Brian slowly falls against the wall, holding his wounded arm. "Yeah, thanks."

Aeryk examines Brian’s arm. "Doesn’t look that bad. I’ll bandage it up just in case though, to stop the bleeding."

"Hurts like a damn bitch." Brian hisses through his teeth.

Aeryk pulls out some gauze and gently wraps it around Brian’s thick upper arm. "You could make my life easier if you weren’t so damn ripped." Aeryk jokes.

"I’ll make a note of that." Brian retorts.

"Look, Bri, I’m sorry for being a jerk to you."

Brian smirks. "Nah, it’s my fault for being an indecisive retard. You should do what makes you happy, even if it isn’t with me."

Aeryk gazes up at Brian, shocked. "Bri, you know that I love you and there couldn’t be any greater pleasure than being with..." He’s interrupted by yells of outrage.

"Sounds like they’ve got company." Brian says lowly.

"Yeah, we better help them out." Aeryk replies.

Aeryk and Brian run through the maze of hallways until they find Aaron and Jackie busy fighting with a small army of Wheelers.

"How many of these bastards do they have?" Jackie snarls. "Hey, nice to see you two."

Aeryk and Brian flatten themselves against the wall. "Hear anything from Doc or Gimp?" Aeryk asks.

"They’re on their way." Aaron says.

"Shadow, how close are we to the room?" Brian asks, returning his headset to it’s regular setting.

"Lucky for you guys, the Wheelers are guarding the room." Jeff says.

"Watch it!" Aaron cries as a Wheeler appears. He sends several rapid shots into the Wheeler’s head. "Damn sneaky bastards."

Brent and Jason turn the corner of the opposite end of the hall. "Well this is nice." Jason snorts. "I’m guessing that is the room."

Aeryk frowns slightly as Jason’s sarcasm as he returns his headset to its original setting. "Any suggestions on how to get rid of these guys?" He ducks as several blasts of plasma energy slam into the corner behind him.

"Well, I could try hacking into their mainframe and shutting them down. I don’t know how long it will take, or how long they’ll stay down." Joe says.

"Good, do whatever you can Stretch." Brian encourages. "I’ll head over to the other side to even things out a bit." He says turning to Aeryk.

"No, you’re hurt." Aeryk warns. "I’ll go."

Brian frowns as he takes Aeryk aside and pulls away his headset. "I don’t care right now. Just cover me." He smiles.

Aeryk’s heart begins to beat furiously with fear for Brian. There are at least thirty Wheelers within the large space surrounding the room with the book. Getting from one side of the hallway and to the other will not be an easy task.

"Be careful." Aeryk whispers.

Brian nods and the two walk back to Aaron and Jackie. "Alright, Brian’s gonna head over there to even things out for us." Aeryk begins. "Aaron, you and Jason cover Brian."

The two nod and they move to their respective corners of the hallways. The moment Aaron and Jason step out they are assaulted with a wave of white plasmic energy.

"Good thing they’re bad shots!" Jason calls over the high-pitched sound of the firing guns.

Aaron skillfully manages to take out a few Wheelers, but sees more emerge from the shadows. "Crap, how many of those things are there?" He cries.

"Don’t know, don’t care." Brian says from behind Aaron. "Just keep shooting."

Brian tears out from behind the corner and barely dodges the rain of energy.

"Welcome to our side." Jason jokes.

Brian sighs. "Thanks." He says curtly.

"How are things going Stretch?" Aeryk calls.

"Still working on it."

"Crap, I’m out." Aaron curses.

"Me, too." Jason replies.

Jackie and Brent take their places and continue to fire at the Wheelers. "Oh this sucks." Jackie groans. "They’re moving in!"

"Damn it Stretch, hurry!" Brian hisses.

"I almost have it!" Joe continues to type at a blinding rate. "Just a couple more seconds."

A wall of Wheelers begins to descend upon the small group in a flurry of white energy.

"Ah, crap!" Jackie ducks away just as a beam of energy whirls past her. "Need some help here!"

Aeryk and Brian take their places behind Jackie and Brent and kneel down. Aeryk begins to fire furiously at the Wheelers.

"Watch it Jackie." Aeryk says calmly as he takes out a Wheeler who had a perfect shot at her exposed body.

"Thanks love." She replies.

"You know, it would make things easier if I used a concussion bomb." Aaron states.

"No explosives." Aeryk snaps.

Aaron pouts and kicks the wall. "You’re no fun."

The Wheelers decide to become intelligent and they shoot for Aeryk, Jackie, Brent, and Brian’s guns. With lethal accuracy, the Wheelers take out their plan.

Jackie moans in pain at the searing heat of the plasmic energy that hit her gun. "Damn it."

Aeryk and the others soon lose their guns and they are forced back into hiding. "Stretch, hurry!" Aeryk calls as the Wheelers are seen slowly approaching their corner.

Aeryk hears Brian call out in horror. He turns to see a gun aimed right at his face. The ominous sound of the plasma gun preparing to fire rings in Aeryk’s head. He grits his teeth as he prepares himself for the shot.

After what seemed like an eternity, Aeryk opens his eyes again. "Huh?" He gasps.

"Sorry about that guys, normally it doesn’t take me that long." Stretch says.

"Fuck Stretch!" Brian roars. "Aeryk almost got killed!"

"Hey, I said I was sorry." Joe says, sounding deeply wounded.

"I-it’s alright Stretch." Aeryk says. "Good job."

Brian and Jason rush over to Aeryk and ask in unison, "Are you alright?"

Aeryk couldn’t help but laugh at the nasty glances Brian and Jason give each other. "Thank you, yes."

Jackie walks over to pick up her gun and sees that the barrel has melted. "Shit, useless."

"Well, fearless leader." Aaron taunts. "Shall we finish what we came ‘ere for?"

The six walk over to the large room and see the name, Vincent Graves, etched into the door.

"Looks like we’ve got the right place, eh?" Jason says.

Aeryk slowly opens the door to the office and peers his head into the dark room. He places his night vision goggles back on and looks around the room. "Well, nothing here." He says pulling off his headset.

"What?" Aaron groans as he shoves past Aeryk and into the room. "Well I’ll be a monkeys uncle." He says as the lights in the room flicker on.

"Maybe it’s hidden." Jackie says as the rest of them shuffle into the room, taking off their headsets.

"Everybody look around for an old looking book with Chinese written on the cover." Aeryk orders.

The six of them spread out and Aeryk finds Jason searching close to him. "So, enjoying your first day?"

Jason smiles. "Yeah. Got to admit, this is an interesting job you guys have." He says searching through large bookshelf before him. "You do this sorta think often?"

"Not recently, no. It’s been boring. Chief started making us do regular police work." Aeryk snorts.

Jackie nudges Brian. "Hey, what’s with the attitude?" She asks noticing Brian glaring at Jason.

"I don’t like that guy." He hisses vehemently.

Jackie arches a brow as she moves over the Vincent’s desk. "Jealous are we?"

Brian shoots a dark look at Jackie. "Shut up."

Jackie shrugs it off as she opens the various drawers and she soon spies a small red button under the desktop. "Hello?" She presses the button and a large monitor silently falls from the ceiling on the opposite end of the office.

The six of them stand back and see Vincent’s image appear with a cocky grin. "Greetings F.Y. Officers." He begins. "Sorry I couldn’t join you on your little escapade through my offices. But I do have a little tidbit of information you might like to have. If you’re looking for the book, you’ll be happy to know that we no longer need it. You’ll find it casually placed in the small compartment under the cashmere rug, and do be careful with it, it cost a fortune."

Brent walks over to the rug and mercilessly hurls it aside to find a small door. "Damn, numerical lock."

"Oh," Vincent continues. "The combination is 82-80-83-85-86. That’s all I have for you this evening. I’ll be seeing you around. And, don’t try and trespass on my property again, it’s against the law." Vincent winks and the monitor shuts off.

Brent enters the combination and with a low clicking sound, the door swings open. He pulls out the book and hands it to Aeryk. "Well, we got what we came here for."

"Yeah," Aeryk says lowly. "But what do we do now?"
